Each month we feature one amazing business to help us all meet new people, build relationships, and support each other in the small business community! This month’s feature is from a shop that specializes in her Fairytale Goth style jewelry. So, without further ado, I introduce to you…
Tell us a little bit about yourself:
My name is Vivien and I run a handmade clothing and accessories brand called Demon Milk. Well, I’ve really been into crafting most of my life. My grandmother taught me how to sew when I was six and ever since then, nobody knows how to get me to stop crafting. It may not even be possible. I’m really into jewelry making with semiprecious gems, crochet, tatting (a type of lace making done with needle and thread), and sewing. I’m also into writing, drawing and photography.
When did you open your business and what inspired you to start it?
I first started selling stuff online in 2011 and since then I’ve been incredibly inspired to grow and make my own crafts as little pieces of artwork. I like to say that everything I make, is made with a lot of love. What inspired me the most is knowing that I can share my work with others and get my work out there and that people who buy the stuff I make are happy when they wear it.
Tell a little bit about your business.
I’ve developed my own signature style which I like to call fairytale goth. I like to mix fairytale inspiration, myth, and legends with a bit of gothic sensibility, since in person I am a goth. I’m also really inspired by victorian and rococo fashion, and baroque artwork. The jewelry I make, I’ve tried to reach out and create and make clothing and jewelry in colors and patterns that I might not wear myself.
At first, I stuck strictly to the gothic label, but then I branched out to include themes and ideas that at first might not seem gothic, but still have an edge of darkness in them as well as a morbid beauty. In using crystals and gem stones, I find that the stones have a very natural quality to them that blends well with darker coordinates but can still be worn in everyday fashion. I have set out the goal of having my shop have the kind of jewelry you might find in an antique shop located somewhere between hell and wonderland.
What do you enjoy most about running your business?
I enjoy making the items the most. I can just sit down with some good music and make crafts for hours on end. For me, I’m not very good at advertisement or getting views on my stuff, but I am good at making quality items. And when it comes to taking photos, it’s easy because I enjoy photography and I studied photography a lot in high school, but editing and watermarking photos then posting the items online is tedious and takes up a lot of time.
What goals do you have for your business over the next year?
I really have a goal to expand my sales by signing up for etsy and storenvy, and I hope to expand by focusing more on advertisement, blog spotlights, and giveaways in 2016.
What advice would you give to someone who is just starting a new business/shop?
Make what you love and put a lot of passion into what you do. It’s all about putting in your own love and your own energy into the stuff that you make. Make the kind of art that only you can make.
